  1. Heat 1/4 cup of olive oil in large pot over medium heat. Add sausage and brown on all sides
  2. When the sausage is almost all browned, add the tomatoes, onion, and garlic. Sauté until softened (but not browned)
  3. Crush and rip the whole peeled tomatoes into little pieces (inside the can, as not to splash everywhere). Add the can’s worth of tomatoes and juice, as well as tomato paste. Fill half the big can with water and add to pot
  4. Add the salt and pepper. Then, peel the lemon and add the peel to the sauce. Stir in the fresh basil
  5. Bring the sauce to a boil, stirring frequently. Then, reduce heat to low and let simmer for several hours, stirring occasionally.
